PLAYTIME Creates Inclusive Play Experiences for Children of All Abilities
November 13, 2012
PLAYTIME creates enriching play experiences for children of all abilities. In fact, our play areas have been ADA-design compliant since long before “inclusive play” was a trendy phrase. Additionally, our play elements are ASTM certified as naturally antibacterial, helping children with weakened immune systems to stay healthy. Finally, our DuraSoft safety flooring is considered the safest, most stable flooring for children with varying physical abilities.
As such, PLAYTIME play areas are often selected by children’s hospitals, pediatric clinics and special-needs centers where children of many abilities congregate and romp.
Inclusive play does not mean that you cluster a set of “accessible” elements in an area, forcing children of different abilities to play separately. It means that you engage all children from the moment they glimpse a playground, enabling them to play together, side-by-side, as they experience all the physical and social benefits that play provides.
“We are passionate about providing accessible, inclusive play experiences to children of all abilities,” says Lindsey Ferguson, Business Development Manager, Healthcare and Fitness of PLAYTIME. “Our playgrounds use vibrant, stimulating colors that attract all children. We design our play areas to foster multiple levels of challenges, enabling kids to tackle the play environment in a way that their ability allows. And, perhaps best of all, our play areas encourage socializing among children of different abilities because children love to pretend-play on our themed elements.”
Designed for Healthy, Inclusive Play
In addition to achieving ADA-design compliance, all PLAYTIME play elements are ASTM certified as antibacterial, helping children with weakened immune systems to stay healthy.
PLAYTIME used an independent third party testing laboratory that performs product testing and validation for manufacturers. Using published ASTM methods G21 and E2180, the tests determined that the PLAYTIME materials and coatings killed bacteria and reduced fungi that came in contact with them. These results indicate that products produced by PLAYTIME are antibacterial for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and are resistant to fungi and mold.
Every PLAYTIME playground is installed atop DuraSoft, poured-in-place safety flooring. A recent study by the National Center on Accessibility found that “rubber tile and poured-in-place rubber surfaces have the highest level of firmness and stability” for children with varying physical abilities.
The Access Board of the Americans with Disabilities Act also reviews play areas and has found that the most inclusive playgrounds include both “ground-level play components” and “elevated play components.” With its climbers, tunnels and slides, PLAYTIME creates both types of elements and knows how to locate them within playgrounds to accommodate wheelchairs.
Selected by Healthcare Organizations that Cater to Children of Many Abilities
It’s no coincidence that you can find PLAYTIME at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, all locations of the Snodgrass-King Pediatric Dental Associates, and many other healthcare organizations that cater to children of all abilities.
You can also find PLAYTIME at Gigi’s Playhouse, a Down syndrome awareness and educational center that provides resources, specialized teaching, and support to individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community.
“The GiGi’s Playhouse mission is to ‘educate, inspire and achieve,’” says board member Gretchen Baldwin. “PLAYTIME totally fits this mission. Obviously, the system is inspiring. And by playing on this system, our kids can build their strength, coordination and creativity to achieve amazing things.”
